What it's used for
Cross-border payments and moving value between currencies, plus a built-in exchange and, increasingly, tokens issued on the XRP Ledger.
The SEC case
In 2020 the US SEC sued Ripple, saying XRP sales were unregistered securities offerings. In July 2023 a court ruled that Ripple's sales of XRP to the public on exchanges were not securities offerings, while its direct sales to institutions were. The case ended in August 2025 when both sides dropped their appeals, leaving a $125 million penalty in place.
Risks to know
- Ripple holds a large amount of XRP, much of it in escrow, and its sales can affect supply.
- Price is volatile and often driven by legal news.
- Copycat "XRP giveaway" scams are common.
