Recurring purchase (DCA) simulator

See what happens when you buy the same dollar amount again and again at different prices: your average cost, total coins and how it compares with buying all at once.

A simulation with prices you choose, not a forecast. Past or example prices say nothing about future prices.

What is dollar-cost averaging?

Buying a fixed dollar amount at regular intervals, whatever the price. You automatically buy more coins when the price is low and fewer when it's high, so before fees your average cost is never above the simple average of the prices (and equal only if every price is the same). It doesn't guarantee a profit: if the price keeps falling, you still lose money.

Questions

Is DCA better than buying all at once?

Not always. When prices mostly rise, buying all at once has historically tended to come out ahead; spreading purchases out reduces the risk of buying everything right before a fall. The simulator lets you compare both.

How is the average cost calculated?

Total dollars spent ÷ total coins bought.
